The Tiny Shift That Changed Everything About My Goals

I used to be really good at setting goals. You know the type: the big dreams, color-coded planners, and a vision board filled with everything I was going to achieve. But here's the thing—I wasn't as great at actually following through on them. Every year, month, and week, I'd set these grand plans, only to watch my motivation fizzle out faster than a sparkler on the Fourth of July.

Sound familiar?

I mean, it’s kind of frustrating, right? You’re pumped and ready to take on the world, but life always seems to throw a curveball. Before you know it, you’re back to square one—feeling defeated, like you're stuck in a cycle of rinse and repeat. So, what changed for me? What made the difference in finally turning those ambitious goals into tangible results?

Here’s the tiny shift that made all the difference: I stopped focusing on the goal itself and started focusing on the system that would get me there.

The Missing Piece: Systems, Not Just Goals

For years, I believed that the key to success was all about setting the right goal. If I could just figure out what I wanted and get laser-focused on it, success would follow. But here's the truth that took me way too long to realize: You don't rise to the level of your goals—you fall to the level of your systems.

Let that sink in for a second.

The goals are the destination. The systems are the path that will get you there.

So instead of looking at the mountain top, you look at the path you will take to get there.

If your path is unorganized or nonexistent, you’re setting yourself up for failure, even if the goal itself is rock solid. When I started focusing on the systems—the daily, weekly, and monthly habits that would bring me closer to my goals—everything changed.

I’ll give you an example.

Instead of just saying, I want to get in shape, I began building a habit-based system that made working out a natural part of my daily routine. It wasn’t about working out for an hour every day (because let’s be real, who has that kind of time?!), but about creating small, achievable actions I could incorporate into my day that added up over time.

When I shifted my focus to creating a system, I no longer had to rely on motivation. Motivation would come and go, but the system? That was something I could count on.

Systems Make the Hard Stuff Easier

Whether your goal is getting in shape, growing your income, or even launching a business, focusing on the system that supports your goal makes everything feel easier. It’s not about making everything perfect from the get-go. It’s about consistency, progress, and putting systems in place that make the journey manageable and achievable.

For example, instead of setting a vague income goal, I built a repeatable framework for bringing in revenue consistently. I broke down every action that would contribute to my business’ growth and created systems that helped me stay on track, even when things got busy. No more hoping for results—I had a system that was working for me.

Why Most Goals Fail

Here’s the hard truth: Most goals fail because they aren’t backed by a strong system. People set these incredible goals—I’m going to lose 30 pounds, I’m going to hit $100K in revenue, I’m going to wake up at 5 AM every day—but they don’t have a clear, repeatable process that makes those goals possible. They rely on willpower, motivation, or hoping things will magically fall into place. Spoiler alert: It doesn't work that way.

The key is to make the goal inevitable. And the only way to do that is to build a system that you can trust to carry you through, even when motivation takes a vacation.

Creating Your Own System for Success

If you’re tired of setting the same goals year after year without seeing results, here’s how you can start implementing systems to make your goals happen:

  1. Break down your big goal into smaller, actionable tasks. What are the daily or weekly actions you can take to get closer to your goal? Instead of focusing on the finish line, focus on the process.

  2. Create a repeatable framework. How can you ensure that you’re doing the right things consistently? Think about systems that are sustainable—something you can do every day or every week, no matter how busy life gets.

  3. Track your progress. Systems work best when you can measure success. Use tools like habit trackers, progress charts, or even a simple journal to monitor how you’re doing and adjust if necessary.

  4. Commit to the process, not just the outcome. Yes, the goal is important, but the system is what will keep you on track. When you embrace the process, success becomes inevitable.

  5. Be patient with yourself. Building a system takes time, and so does seeing results. Don’t get discouraged if things don’t move at the speed you’d like. Trust the system, and trust that consistency will pay off.

Ready to Make Your Goals Happen?

Here’s the thing: You don’t have to rely on willpower or fleeting motivation to achieve your goals. All you need is a solid system that works for you. And once you have that in place, the goals you’ve been chasing for so long will feel inevitable.

I’m working on something big to help you do just that—create systems that actually make your goals happen. Stay tuned for more details coming soon. 😉
